Mechanical Engineering is often referred to as the Basic Engineering Discipline because whatever the field of engineering, one wishes to major in, the basics of Mechanical Engineering come in handy in the effective design, development, and optimization of equipment and devices used in any industrial activity.
In our Institution the Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in the Academic year 2011-12. The department has well developed laboratories and workshops to impart practical knowledge and skills to students. The department is well poised to shape the students to become highly motivated Engineers, Technologists, Entrepreneurs and Policy makers needed to address complex societal issues.
The objective of the department is to produce high caliber technocrats and eminent Mechanical Engineers.
The Engineering Workshop Practice for engineers is a training lab course spread over entire semester. The modules include training on different trades like Fitting, Carpentry, Black smithy etc… which makes the students to learn how various joints are made using wood and other metal pieces.
Fluid Mechanics and Machinery Laboratory enables students to understand the fundamentals of turbine, pumps and ram. The turbine models available in lab are Pelton, Frances. Apart from it, other experimental setup in lab are reciprocating gear pump, vane pump, centrifugal pump, impact jet apparatus, test rig, hydraulic ram. Objectives of the experimental setup are to compare the results of analytical models introduced in lecture to the actual behavior of real fluid flows.
Manufacturing Technology Laboratory is a well equipped laboratory which provides ideas on the practical knowledge of several steps of casting, pattern usage, mould creation, gating design; produce a casting and check casting defects. Also the Manufacturing Processes (MP) Laboratory provides students with the opportunity to study and practice manufacturing processes. This lab provides students experiential learning with the nature and technique of manufacturing processes.
The main objective of Strength of Materials Laboratory lab is to determine all the properties of engineering materials and their testing procedure for undergraduate students with all required experiments. These properties are useful for the students in subjects like strength of materials and Basic Mechanical Engineering. All the major properties are determined using related experiments such as tensile test, compressive test, hardness test, impact test torsion and bending test etc.
Thermal engineering lab is established in mechanical department to understand the basic principles of thermodynamics and its application in machines and in power plant engineering. Lab is equipped with automobile engines and its accessories, boilers structures, power plant setup, refrigeration model etc to get the detailed insight of the real word problem. The Student can visualize and understand the working of equipment’s and apparatus and incorporate his theoretical knowledge to practical knowledge.
Dynamics of Machines lab is to impart practical knowledge on design and analysis of mechanisms for the specified type of motion in a machine. With the study of rigid bodies motions and forces for the transmission systems, machine kinematics and dynamics can be well understood.
Metrology and Measurements Laboratory provides the students with the necessary skills for calibration and testing of different gauges and instruments. Also the students can able to collect data, perform analysis and interpret results to draw valid conclusions through standard test procedures using various metrology instruments. The laboratory encompasses a set of classical measuring and gauging instruments to determine appropriate dimensional and geometric tolerances for the components.
CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) refers to computer software that is used to both design and manufacture products. CAD is the use of computer technology for design and design documentation. CAD/CAM applications are used to both design a product and program manufacturing processes, specifically, CNC machining. CAM software uses the models and assemblies created in CAD software to generate tool paths that drive the machines that turn the designs into physical parts. CAD/CAM software is most often used for machining of prototypes and finished parts.
Mechatronics laboratory is an integrated laboratory covering Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Control theory applications for the modeling and design of intelligent automated system. Mechatronics systems are used in automotive systems, aerospace systems, consumer electronics, and robotics. The Mechatronics Laboratory has fully equipped workbenches for design, construction, and analysis of Mechatronics systems.
